Let Your Family’s Next Weekend Get a Little Wild

The kinds of weekends that families remember for a lifetime are not spent crammed in the back of a car, staring at phones for hours with no destination in sight. The weekends worth remembering are filled with unexpected surprises and novel experiences, where a child’s face lights up at something they’ve never seen before, where the adults find themselves just as wide-eyed, and the whole family goes to bed with stories to tell. When it comes to creating these types of weekends, Georgia Safari Conservation Park in Madison, Georgia, is the king of the savanna.

And the best news? An escape to the Serengeti is just an hour east of Atlanta. Madison is an easy trek for daytrippers and perfect for those looking to make a weekend staycation with the family. Pull off Monticello Road, and the 530 acres of open grasslands unfold around you.

The experience begins the moment you arrive, with more than 34 species and growing roaming the park–zebras, giraffes, rhinos, antelope, ostriches, and so much more! The question is never what to do, but where to start. The park’s guided safari tours take families through the heart of our park, with expert guides who know how to read the animals and translate what’s happening for curious junior rangers and their parents alike. The Giraffe and Rhino Barn Tour is a family favorite, offering an intimate behind-the-scenes hour with the park’s reticulated giraffes and southern white rhinos that’s perfect for the family album and this year’s Christmas card.

But staying overnight is where the weekend really cements into the memory for years to come.

The Luxury Safari Tents are a genuinely lovely option for families. These two-bedroom units sleep up to four guests comfortably with a king bed in the primary room and two XL twin beds in the second, making the sleeping arrangements an easier and more agreeable experience than a rough-it-in-the-woods weekend. The interiors are warm and designed with care, with plush bedding, wood floors, a full bathroom fitted with a soaker tub and tiled shower, and a stocked kitchenette and coffee station for cozy mornings on the private deck. Step outside and you’re overlooking the Veldt Pasture, where Watusi, Scimitar-horned Oryx, and ostrich graze across a 20-plus-acre stretch of open land. Binoculars are provided, but sharing with siblings is optional.

For families looking for something even more memorable, the Giraffe Suite sits on the second floor of the park’s state-of-the-art Giraffe and Rhino Barn. It offers views that are unlike anything else available in the state. A king bedroom, queen sleeper sofa in the living room, full kitchen, and private deck make it perfectly comfortable for a family of four, but the floor-to-ceiling windows that look directly into the barn where the park’s giraffes spend their evening make this a far cry from a hotel off the highway.

Dinner, for those staying overnight, is a short drive into historic downtown Madison. The town is filled with charm, great restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and a pace of life that helps you unwind from the busy hustle and bustle of daily life. A natural end to a full day at the park, and a pleasant contrast to the wild morning that awaits back at the tents.

Reservations for both tours and lodging can be made at georgiasafari.com. Be sure to book in advance as spots fill up quickly, especially on weekends. The park is open daily from 8:30 am until 5 pm, and is located at 1761 Monticello Road in Madison.
